MELBOURNE Cup history was made yesterday, and thousands will remember witnessing it from Kembla Grange, leaping to their feet as Makybe Diva stormed home for a record third win.

Friends Johnny Tang and Andrew Warren were among thousands of elated punters who backed the mare to win - celebrating with high fives when she crossed the line.

Mr Warren wished he could say he had money on the legend each year. "I think with all the attention around her and the public pressure, she had to run," he said. "But three in a row, it's incredible."

Marketing consultant Glenys Holby said all the hype surrounding Makybe Diva had made the champion the talk of Kembla Grange - before and after the race.
